In 1943, an enterprising young Indian named V.P. Windlass reached the apex of his goals when the small cutlery firm he founded, Windlass Steelcrafts, was awarded its first British government contract. Mr. Windlass was selected by the famed British Gurkha Regiments to build their critical and unique combat knife, the kukri, and this contract continued uninterrupted for many years, a record which continues to grow with each passing year.
Over the next 69 years, this family-owned firm has been central to some of the greatest workmanship in this industry, from military combat knives and dress & drill sabers to decorative replicas of historical swords. Windlass is also known for its unique line of period clothing and LARP (latex) products. The clothing is derived directly from the pages of history, as worn by the lords and ladies in Medieval Europe, Renaissance, or ancient Greece.
Help From Across the Atlantic
As British influence progressed it was clear that the valuable manufacturing services and quality were in demand and sought by many countries. Through the 1970’s and 1980’s the company that had made its mark with the British and Indian ministries of Defence, landed in USA. Across the Atlantic in the United States, a small and relatively unknown firm, Atlanta Cutlery Corp, had been approaching the U.S. military for the same purpose and an allegiance was formed.
Ultimately, Atlanta Cutlery Corp. became a major U.S. Marine Corps supplier of dress swords and sabers through this alliance. And for the future, these relationships in addition to the recently acquired facilities in Spain, the company now serves 15 countries and caters to military contracts, historical reproductions, and licensed consumer products that you can own.
This includes iconic props from major studios that include Disney, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Marvel Ent., Ubisoft, Blizzard, Starz, HBO and more.
Over the years the group has diversified successfully to the fields of garments manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, real-estate, oilfield equipments and machines among other things. It is unlikely that Mr. Windlass could have envisioned the tremendous impact his small firm would have when he founded his company 69 years ago. Yet his legacy lives on today as his sons continue to up hold the high standards and tradition set decades ago.
